Vinyl banner weight by the ounce...

qsxlt-thumb

Vinyl banners are a very cost effective and noticeable form of indoor and outdoor advertising for both public and private sector companies and individuals. Digitally printed vinyl banners are economical, reusable and informational which makes them well worth their weight in advertising dollars. And though typically banner materials appear to be the same...but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Vinyl banner material, in and of itself, comes in a variety of different weights typically ranging from 9 ounces on up to 22 ounces,  with 10 oz. and 13 oz. being the most popular vinyl banner weights on the market, for their overall durability and affordability. Both our 10 oz. and 13 oz. vinyl banners are suitable for indoor or outdoor use and are normally weather resistant anywhere from 1 - 5 years if properly installed and maintained.

Does the weight of a banner convey it's strength?

Ounce for ounce, banner weights can be very deceptive. The weight of the banner is exactly just that...weight. When ordering a 10 oz. banner it simply means that the banner, per square yard, weighs 10 oz. So even if you order a 13 oz. vinyl banner, it doesn't automatically mean that you are purchasing a stronger banner, it just means your are buying a heavier material. Also, with heavier banner weights, the density of the vinyl can make the material less opaque which greatly reduces any bleed-through light issues. The actual strength of a banner is determined by the density of the woven scrim that makes up the vinyl material (referred to as denier). The higher the denier...the stronger the banner. For instance, you could order a 10 oz. banner with a 500 denier count that would essentially be a stronger banner than a 13 oz vinyl banner with a lower denier count of 250 per square yard.

So with that being said, the weight of the material doesn't make for a strong or better banner, but possibly a more expensive banner. When shopping around for digital banner printing, ask questions, don't just assume that a heavier banner is your best choice. Most trained sales representatives will gladly answer any questions you may have about their vinyl banner materials and can also help assist you in your efforts to purchase a banner that fits your needs and your budget.
