Weeding is a term used to describe a step in cut vinyl production.
Weeding is the plain and simple act of removing all the excess material from any decal, sticker, lettering or graphics that are cut-to-shape. Weeding is an integral part of custom cut decal production. Decals are either digitally printed and cut-to-shape or are cut out of colored vinyl material. Both ways of producing a custom cut or die cut vinyl decal will eventually require vinyl weeding to produce the end product that doesn't have a background.
Standard cut digital decals (square, rectangle, oval, circle, etc.) still need to be weeded to remove the extra vinyl material whether you print one or one hundred decals. If we were to leave the extra material in tact, and not weed the decal, then the customer would receive a solid piece of vinyl and have to weed the decal themselves or reverse weed the decal and pull the printed decal out of the vinyl.
Simple weeding, as described above, is already factored into our decal pricing on our decal pricing page. But for custom cut decals, that require more intricate vinyl weeding, we'll need to assess if there will be any additional weeding charges. With some decals easier to weed than others, it's always best to provide your sign company with artwork and request a decal quote. Requesting a decal quote for a custom cut decal gives you the most accurate pricing and also gives our design team a chance to check your artwork and make sure that it can be cut-to-shape and if we can produce your decal in a manner that meets your specific decal needs.
Weeding is sometimes referred to as picking. Both terms are one and the same and both involve clearing away the extra vinyl material for decals that are cut to shape.
